Jack Ruane Showband Ballina
Anybody old enough to remember the Olympia and Atlantic Ballrooms will be familiar with the name of
Jack Ruane and his Showband. Jack was the West of Ireland's answer to Mick Delahunty and Maurice
Mulcahy and his orchestra played all over Ireland and in the top Irish ballrooms in Britain and the United
States. When tastes changed in the Sixties he was one of the few big band leaders to successfully make
the changeover to showband and he contined to enjoy a successful career on the road until the boom
finally ended in the early Seventies. He then returned to jazz which was his first love and continued to
play at local sessions until his health gave out.
Jack died peacefully in his home town of Ballina May 1997
